Hey, what's up with zen damage?

I guess you've noticed that the blog hasn't been updated in a while. I know, it's my fault. When work calls, you have to leave some projects aside. And zen damage had to be put aside.

But, I'm always coming back to it, because I just like this blog and I want to keep it alive.

There are some news. First: I'll be moving this blog to its own domain: zendamage.com. You can go there, but you won't find anything yet. I'm working on the new design, and seeing if I'll put other resources there as well. If anyone is willing to collaborate, please leave a comment, and I'll contact you. I'll be setting up a contact form, too just in case anyone is willing to take part in this project.

The second thing is: I got rid of all ads. So the site is completely ad free, just because. I want this blog to grow, and provide a good service. It's not commercial, it's just done because I like it. Again, if anyone is willing to collab, or has a suggestion, please leave a comment. I don't post an email address because it's bound to be flooded with spam.

Thanks guys, and be sure I'll have new material soon.

Layout refresh

Nothing fancy, but I went in the code and changed the CSS a bit, so we've got different colors, and a bit different layout. It was just a quick change to refresh Zen Damage a bit, hope you like it.

I'm thinking about moving the site to its own wordpress. Not sure yet, as it doesn't receive a lot of traffic, so, we'll see, we'll see.

If I had to describe Youske Ueno's art with one word, it would be: weird. Weird, true, but great, cool :) I highly recommend you take a look at his gallery of paintings. One special things to notice is that his art is full of icons, and thank God, he's put a page describing them, so we understand his iconography way better.

Massive Swerve

There's something I love about blogs. They are more personal than a simple artist's site showing his profile. You can find out about their news, projects, inside opinions, and all that stuff. So, this time, I want to give a quick link to Massive Swerve, which is Robert Valley's blog.

He's been posting a few pages of his book, which you can also buy at lulu.com. It's just amazing. I want to buy it, though the final cost for me, as I live in Ecuador, due to shipping, goes up to 35 USD, which is a bit too much for me, so I'll have to avoid that and visit his blog instead. You'll find very very cool and sexy artwork over there. His style reminds me of that of fashion designers/sketchers. It's very cool.

You might also want to visit his site, and above all, I recommend you watch one movie that is in his portfolio. It's an immersive experience. The animation isn't really complex, it's just about you going to a party, taking drugs, meeting women, having sex. It's really cool (and the music is perfect).

Again, I say, you're going to love it. So, go for the massive swerve.

I'm usually not interested in the life of the artist, but only in the art they create. That's why I have no idea if Samuel Cochetel is famous or not. I think he's from France because his site is in french, and he's got a french domain. That's about everything.

Lost, the illustrations

I know you know what Lost is, and if you don't well, it's a tv series about a group of people that are lost on an island that has quite a bunch of misteries that are still to be solved. It's addicting, and envolving. Just like 24. (somebody even created a lost theory generator to try to explain all the misteries of the island).

Anyway, somebody did a few illustrations of the characters of lost, with a very funny, very contemporary cartoon style (which I don't like that much, but it's still clean and nice). I don't know, you may just enjoy them, or use the thumbnails as avatars for the forum you go to.

Michael Moebius, fine art

Michael Mobius is a german artist, currently located in California, USA. He's collaborated with Playboy, drawing, well, you know it, pinup girls. His paintings and drawings are very realistic, mostly focused on the female beauty.

Pyromaniac is a 19 year old artist from Chile. Yep, he's young, and quite talented. His style is influenced by japanese anime, a lot, though he's developed quite an original style.

Dofus

Dofus is an massive multiplayer online role playing game. It's free, and it's a pretty good game actually.

Anyway, focusing on the subject of this site, I found a blog of one of the illustrators of this game, who uploaded a few illustrations related to the game mentioned above. You can see them here and here.

Very nice drawings, wonderful style. It's really worth a visit, and if you have the chance, you should download dofus and start playing.

Nicc Balce (The Null)

Nicc Balce is a freelance illustrator, and a very good one. It looks like he also likes drawing girls, which is always nice. He's done some illustrations for halfproject, wa007 and a few gaming magazines. He's also written and illustrated 'Random Encounters' for Viper Comics.

He's got a very clean and sharp style, quite original (at least it is to me). His illustrations are simply beautiful. You won't find too many of his illustrations at his site (the null) though what's there is just pure quality. If you like the drawings at his site, then you'll find in love with the illustrations and sketches you'll find at his deviantart gallery. You'll notice he likes drawing pretty girls.

I really don't remember if I already posted about this (and I'm too lazy to search my old posts). So, here we go: artplaymix is the online portfolio of Jason and Heather Martin. He is the illustrator, and she's the colorist.

Well, their artwork is quite impressive. I remember I found the site when I saw an issue of girls of gaming back in 2005. So, well, you can imagine what they like: drawings of pretty girls.

They've got a nice clean style, which I love, but who am I to give an opinion. You better go visit their gallery of illustrations and see for yourselves.

I think you know that deviantart it's a goldmine full of very talented artists. So, here's one of them: Extvia, an art student from China. I don't know if Extvia is a guy or a girl...anyway, you can visit his site at ext-via.com, or his blog, though if you don't speak chinese, then you're not going to understand anything, that's way you could also visit his deviantart page.

He's got a very nice style, drawing some kind of sexy female bunnies, I don't know, you'd have to look at his gallery. So, There you go, hope you like it as much as I did.

I love how so many people involved in the illustration and comics world (industry?) have blogs nowadays, just because a blog is such a nice resource to get to know the artist, the inside, their tools, the way they work.

I mean, with blogs, you don't only get to see the art produced by these awesome artists, but also you learn why, or how they did this or that artpiece.

Anyway, so, who do we have today? Craig Rousseau, talented illustrato, who's worked in Batman Beyond, Batman: Gotham Adventures and Impulse. Obviously, he has a website, where he showcases some of his work. What can I say? you're going to love it.

3 movies you should see to mess up your brain

So, what do we have for today? Movies. While I work, I usually play a movie on my other pc while I'm working. I don't pay much attention while I work, unless the movie is really really good. Well, the other day I watch an amazing freaky movie that messed my brain. Beside that one, there are other two I remember did the same. All the three are hard to understand, as a matter of fact, people tend to say they are not meant to find an specific explanation, you should just watch them and get dragged by the experience. Also, these are movies you can see again and again, and each time you'll find something new in them. Simply put, they are amazing.

So, lets start (not with the review, you know I don't like to write a lot)

A tale of two sisters

Written and directed by Ji-won Kim, this movie was made back in 2003. It's from South Korea, and it's original title is Janghwa, Hongryeon. What is it about? Two sisters who, after spending time in a mental institution, return to the home of their father and cruel stepmother. Strange things start happening (you must be familiar with the asian style of horror movies, like the Grudge or Ringu). Yes, strange things, but one thing that is very cool: it's not at all what you expect from a horror movie. The plot reveals itself as you watch the movie, and even at the end, it leaves you thinking: what the hell did I just see? what was going on? I can't tell you guys more details without spoiling the movie. I'll just say it's a must see. Rather strange, creepy (even the house is creepy), I guess you'll enjoy it, if you like the other two movies I'll mention

Lost Highway

Directed by David Lynch in 1197. That should tell you enough (the guy is known for very bizarre movies, like the more recent Mulholland Drive, which is another great movie, from my point of view). What is it about? A jazz saxophonist that suspects his wife of having an affair is accused of her murder after he has a bizarre encounter at a party. He then inexplicably transforms into a young mechanic and begins leading a new life. Simple plot, but wow, it's just like watching somebody else's dream, infact, it is somebody elses dream. Unexplicable things happen, your brain gets toasted if you try to understand this movie as Lynch tells it. Cool movie. Should I say more? I'm not a critic, so you should just google the reviews of this movies, they'll give you more detail. I'm just here to give you some tips :).

Donnie Darko

Some say it's the best independent movie of all time. I say it's alright, as it doesn't show boobies. Directed by Richard Kelly, the main character is played by Jake Gyllenhaal (known now for his role in Brokeback Mountain. What is it about? A troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit that manipulates him to commit a series of crimes, after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident. Bizarre is the keyword. It's kind of a slow movie, but it's very intriguing. The end, as the other movies I mentioned, it's messed up. You will finish watching this movie sayin: wtf? daaaaamn? uhm, ok, lets watch it again.

Well, you'll like them if you like artistic movies. Movies that don't pretend to give you all the answers, but let you think, let you dream, and analize them yourself. They are crazy, so, the only way that you'll understand them is if you're crazy. They are hard to watch, but are very enjoyable. Hope you agree with me, and if not, go away, freaks!

Skottie Young, comic artis, and me, frustrated

I like drawing, I really do, but I haven't even hold a pencil in my hand for a year or more. I'm thinking to get a table, and get into the digital arts. It'd make sense, I spend 18 hours a day infront of a computer, wired. It's sad though, when you grow up, you don't have time for anything. Work has taken a lot of my energy and time. But don't get me wrong, I work in something I enjoy (flash, php programmer, sometimes web designer). So, what's my point? well, I don't know. I just wanted to comment that I want to get into drawing stuff again. Not as a job, but as something I've always enjoyed. It looks like it might happen, as a friend of mine wants to start a tshirt company, and requested me to gather all of my drawings to show them to his partner, so I could participate as the official designer. It'd be fun. I'll tell you what happens, possibly next week.

Now, to the next subject. Over here, in Ecuador, up to where I know, there's not much of a comics scene. Really, what did you expected? there are only few places that specialize in comic books, and they have the most known and most commercial work, mostly crap. That's why I was never interested in comic books, though I love them, as some are real pieces of art. Graffitti has always catched my attention, infact it's a big influence in my style. Now, imagine the surprise when browsing the web, I found a mix of both worlds: hip hop, graffitti, and comics. That's the first thing I noticed when I was at Skottie Young's site. I thought it was just me, that it was in my imagination that his style is very "graffittiesque". But I was not wrong, he actually confirms it in an interview done a while ago in galaxy far far away:

"I got into comics when I was in junior high. So, right before the big Image debut, I got into the comic scene. I was into the hip hop culture, and was a skater, so graf style art was always around me. So that's where my art was as well."

Cool, so definitely, I'll say he's talented, and got a great style. I'm a fan now, wooohoo. He's done some work for cool labels: Warner Bros. Animation, Universal Studios Animation, Spike TV, Mattel, Fisher Price, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Devils Due Publishing, Image Comics, Udon Comics, Upper Deck, White Wolf Publishing, Giant Merchandising, Wizard Magazine.

So, go, visit his site, and look at some great artwork at his gallery (I love the way he draws spiderman).

Coloring comics

Steve Hamaker, who is coloring the new Bone color editions (link), has posted a couple of entries in his blog about how to color comics in photoshop.

His first entry, coloring with photoshop is a set of images showing the different steps from lineart to finished colored piece. He offers no explanations about each step, but it's a nice start to see what he does to color the comics.

His second entry, more coloring stuff, though short, gives a few details of what he does to prepare the coloring in photoshop.

The comments of both entries offer some nice tips, too. I suggest you read them.

Martin Abel and his pinup girls

Well, I know, I'm a complete ignorant about the illustrators and cartoonists world. I am, but I love the work of a talented artist.

So, I tried to look for info about Martin Abel, and I didn't find anything. Well, there's his website, where you can see some nice pinup girl illustrations, and some other samples of his work. What can I say: sexy! (infact, too sexy, if you visit his gallery, be warned that there's some nudity and adult illustrations). But, there's no info loading for his "about section". Sad :(

Although, if you want to meet the guy, he's got a myspace account (click here). Anyway, he's got a cute cool hot sexy style. His drawings are pretty awesome (well, what can I say, drawings of girls with tight clothes, what did you expect).

Small changes

I guess I like to waste time. Logged into blogger, to the admin panel, just because I needed to add a link in the template. Well, I spent 1 hour tweaking the css of the site. At least I improved it, I believe so. Small changes in colors and layout, minimal, but I think they make a big difference.

I really can't count how many times I've completely changed the layout of this site. I'd say I've changed it about 15 times, not just small changes like now, but always a complete redesign. Any way, that's of no interest, right? because things have to change, things have to evolve. One thing is sure, I like more and more the way the design of this blog has, but eventually, it's nature, I'll be changing it.

Finally, well, I know I don't have many readers, but for the few that exist, and the casual visitors, if you have any suggestions, or requests (maybe topics you'd like me to blog about), don't be shy, leave a comment.

So who is he? well, in my last post I linked to the comicstrip generator. This is the guy that did all the illustrations for that nice web application. And well, it's his turn: this is his portfolio. Quite interesting, crazy style. This guy has a twisted imagination, and a lot of talent. I didn't like his illustrations at first, but the more I look at them, the more I like them.

StripGenerator

Back with a new post. This one is not new at all, but a while ago, it seemed to have gone offline. I checked again today, and it's back up. It is a wonderful comic strip generator (done in flash). Easy to use, with lots of characters and objects you can use to create ambience and of course, a cool strip. There's also a gallery where you can see other people's comics, maybe to help you get inspired, or just enjoy and laugh.

Sean Galloway, Cartoonist

Anyway, I found out about Sean Galloway by randomly browsing on some blogs. There's a great interview at sean-galloway-interview.blogspot.com (part of the Character Design Blog). Great little read to get to know a little bit more about him. One thing that really impressed me is that he's self-taught. He's designs are really cool, sharp and stylized. I like them a lot.

You can visit his deviantart page at cheeks-74.deviantart.com, or go directly to his deviantart gallery. I didn't count, but I'm pretty sure he's got hundreds of samples of his artwork over there. And you know he's good, as he's work for some cool companies like Sony, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Darkhorse comics, among others.

Matthew Stewart and his Pinup Art

Matthew Stewart is about my age (born in 1980) and I must say I envy him. He's got a lot of talent. Mainly train as animator, but he's doing some pinup art since 2003 (he says he tries, I say he's got an excelent style).

Mojave Phone Booth, the movie

The Mojave Phone Booth story is old. Simply put:

The Mojave Phone Booth was a lone telephone booth placed circa 1960 in the Mojave National Preserve which attracted an online following in 1997 due to its unusual location.

Fans called the booth attempting to get a reply, and a few took trips to the booth to answer, often camping out at the site. Several callers kept recordings of their conversations. Over time, the booth became covered in graffiti, as many travelers would leave a message on it.

The booth was removed on May 17, 2000

So, now, someone is making a movie out of this internet phenomenon. No official site, maybe a bad movie, I guess it's low budget, but it's interesting to see the internet past trends are going to Hollywood. Maybe "Digg.com - The movie" will be real by 2008??

Yes yes, I know, I said I'm shutting down the blog :P At least I haven't posted for a while. Anyway. A while ago i found this pic in some site, and fell in love with the style. It wasn't until today that I stumble upon it again, this time in the author's website.

So, it was Joshua Middleton. All I can say is that he's an amazing illustrator, he really does know how to draw. Great work, great style. Bye bye, shutting down

Alright, I've fought to maintain this blog, come up with a cool idea, post cool links, etc. The truth is, it takes time, and it's a burden. I'm busy in some other things. As a matter of fact, I have so many unfinished projects it's unbelievable. I'm just shutting down everything that is not a priority for me right now. This blog is one of those things.

It's been fun, you know, but it takes time, and time is something i don't have these days. If this blog had a lot of readers and comments, it'd be another story, but it's like I've been writing to myself. I don't know much about Felix Sputnik. I found his blog when I was randomly clicking in another blog's links. All I know is: "Felix Sputnik lives in a small castle on a hill in South East London with his partner Miss Hathorn. She grows leeks and they both keep bees."

But hey, he's got a great blog. Some cool illustrations, and it's fun to read what he writes, too. I'm in love with one of his sketches, which can be found here in this post: National Gallery. Don't you love it? a sketch of a statue of a naked girl, from different angles.

Ren and Stimpy's father

I'm sure you've seen Ren & Stimpy. Do you know who created that cartoon? John Kricfalusi, and it happens that he has a wonderful blog, full of his artwork, ramblings, and tips for cartoon artists. It's worth a visit. It's really a great site, just as an example, read one of his latest post: Barber Shop 4-STORY STRUCTURE, it'll give you an inside look of how he structures the story of a cartoon, and how important it is. Besides that, yes, the site is full of his excelent drawings, he's got a great style, you can't do nothing but love it.

Redesign

A few hours later, I changed the entire CSS. Amazing how just by changing the style sheet, the aspect of the blog completelly changed. I decided to have more colorfull elements, maybe that'll give some life to the site. Besides color, I'll try to post more images once in a while.

But the main thing is content. I still have to think about good topics to write about. You see, if I want readers, then I have to provide good content. It's that simple. So, the first phase is done: make up is ready. Now I have to provide some useful content.

Google this google that, you hear google everywhere. Yes, it is a very useful search engine, but don't you get tired of typing w.w.w...g.o.o.g.l.e...c.o.m every time? the domain name gets boring :)

So, what to do? Google owns a lot of funny names that point to their site

Doing a whois search of google's name, you know they got two ip's:

You can do a whois search for each ip, and you'll find the names of those domains:

Nostalgia

I woke up today, and noticed I'm still 25, though this year, eventually, I'll be 26. Nothing wrong about that, the only thing that never changes is that everyday you're a day older.

Anyway,I watched "Driving Miss Daisy". Great movie, a little slow for someone that is used to action stuff like Matrix or King Kong. It's also a little sad. You realize something: people get old, start getting useless. It's sad really. Today I'm young, I can spend days without sleeping, eat what I want, go wherever I want, see everything and hear everything. But one day, every move of my body will be slow, and my trembling hand will be hard to control. My eyes will show me less, and my ears won't let me listen. This is what's happening to my grandmother right now. And it's sad, because you see how she gets desperate, because she notices that she isn't what she used to be. And we all will be like that.

And everytime I think about this, i also think i should get up and start living everyday as if it were the last one. I think that I should finish every project i start, and that i should never procastinate. I think that i should go back to the gym, and stay healthy, and stop smoking. I just wish all those thoughts could last more than a day.

Suddenly, when I stop for a little bit, to wonder what i'm doing with my life, i noticed i've wasted a lot of time. I work everyday, and plan for the future, but 3 years have passed where the main thing in my life has been to organize it, to improve it. I should live faster.

Now, this tools have help to the explossion of art blogs around the net. Pretty cool. Now not everybody is deviantart dependant.

Now, some links to cool blogs of artist that, for my taste, are amazing. Great styles, and they are just a little piece of all the puzzle that is the internet:

Neptoonstudios: a very childish toony style. I love it.
Current Flavor: what catched my attention here, is the couple of posts about storyboarding. Very interesting blog indeed.

Alien for Christmas: great blog. The style of the artist is very classic, colourfull, fun.

Somebody posted this link at flashkit. It's amazing, well, the detail of the drawing isn't that great, because this was done using a sketchpad done in flash, but it's a great example of how to draw.

It's someone drawing a girl, starting from the skeleton, passing through the nude state, in underwear and finally fully dressed.

Bawidamann is a site with some great illustration of pinup girls. It's a good combination between current style of vector illustrations and oldschool pinup art. It seems the site has not been updated for quite a while, but nevertheless, the visit is worth it.

Of course, this artist is a little different than the ones I have been mentioning during the last days, as he is more of an illustrator rather than a comic artist or someone that draws girls for comics. That does not take away the fact that he is indeed very talented.

Maria McMorbid is a Comic artist. She's from Norway. She's very very talented. Where is her art? at Deviantart. Yep, deviantart is a huge place and there's a lot of not-so-nice artwork there, but from time to time, you find something that is really impressive.

Rimfrost's comics are kind of simple, but they are funny, deep, and well, it's one of those comics where you think the characters are real, somehow, somewhere in a surreal world.

Comic Strip Generator and Community

Once upon a time, there was a very cool comic strip generator done in flash at thirdframestudios.com, but it seems that link is dead. It's a shame. So, I was googling for hours until I found something cool: Gnomz. Don't be scared if you see everything is in french, just click on the english flag on top right to switch to english.

Ok, now to the point. Gnomz is a community to share the comic strips you can create with their own comic strip generator (pixel art style). It's pretty neat, you can choose from a list of predefined characters, or you can create your own. So, if you have a nice idea for a comic, but never got into it because you didn't have the time to draw it, maybe this is your opportunity to start working on it.

More Bode

Ok, a few hours ago I mentioned a little about Vaugn Bode. Let me expand that info. Bode was an icon of the 70's. And New York Graffiti artists back then were inspired by his art. Dondi, Mare 139, Seen and others used legendary Bode characters like the lizards, Cheech Wizard and Bode's broads in their own creations painted on the walls of New York. Bode's artwork has ever since been used as inspiration in a lot of graffiti around the world. You can check some of these pieces at markbode.com, art crimes, again art crimes, and the official bode site.

Now, if you're getting interested in Bode's art, well, I must say that he was a very underground artist, and I haven't found much about him on the net, except a lot of short biographies. But there's hope, if you visit da Vaughn Bode Site, you'll find a few comic strips and drawings of his, of two of his most famous creations: Cheech Wizard (which tells the story of a mysterious wizard), and Deadbone (fun story of lizards living in a strange land).

Besides that, if you do some research, you'll find another artist with a very similar style: Mark Bode. Well, he's vaughn Bode's son. Although I admit he's has talent, it seems like he went for what sells: copy his father's style. Mostly known for the comic "Miami Mice", he has some other good pieces like "Cobalt 60". Go visit his site, you'll find some nice illustrations. But again, nothing like the original Bode

Vaugn Bode is one of my favorite comic artists. His style had a lot of influence in the hip hop graffiti style in New York. He also influenced my art in a very important way, but that's not what I came to talk about.

One of my favorites sites is PoemToons. Really a small website, but interesting, not for its design, but for its contents. Clever poetry and illustrations made by Vaughn Bode. He loved drawing women :)

Voo2do is another on of those Task Managers to help you organize your tasks, and therefor your time. Pretty usefull if you're a designer running a lot of projects at a time.

You can sign up and use it for free. And another cool thing of this web application is that it is ajax intensive :)

New layout

Ok, I did some changes in the layout and color of this site. It still looks awful, but better than before, so it's an improvement in the design. I'll keep trying to see what else can I add.

I want to keep it simple, no images, and all CSS.
